Free helplines in India

If this just happened…

Someone had sex with me without my consent
  • Get somewhere safe first. It was not your fault.
  • Go to a hospital as soon as you can, ideally within 72 hours. You can get emergency contraception, medicine to prevent HIV (PEP), STI checks and care for injuries.
  • In India, hospitals must give survivors of sexual assault first aid and medical treatment free of cost.
  • You can get medical care without deciding yet whether to report. If you might report, try not to wash or change clothes before an exam, but go to the hospital either way.
  • Call 112 or the women’s helpline 181 for support.
The condom broke / we didn’t use protection
  • Emergency contraceptive pills work best the sooner you take them, ideally within 72 hours. In India they’re sold at pharmacies without a prescription.
  • If there’s a risk of HIV, go to a government hospital (ART or ICTC centre) within 72 hours and ask about PEP.
  • Get an STI test after a couple of weeks, and again if your doctor suggests it. Call 1097 to find a free testing centre.
Someone is threatening to share my photos
  • Don’t pay and don’t send more. Take screenshots of the messages and their profile.
  • Call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. Sharing intimate images without consent is a crime.
  • Tell someone you trust. You don’t have to handle this alone.
I’m thinking about hurting myself
  • Please call Tele-MANAS on 14416 now. It’s free and confidential, and someone will listen.
  • If you’re in immediate danger, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
  • Reach out to one person you trust and tell them how you’re feeling.
My partner controls, hurts or scares me
  • Checking your phone, controlling who you see, threats or violence are not normal and not your fault.
  • Call 181 (women’s helpline) or 112 in an emergency. Make a plan for where you could go if you need to leave quickly.
